Description: As part of this programme, designed for preschool and primary school children, the Museum organises art workshops, making the Early Man's clothing workshops, dino playgroups and fieldwork in the surroundings of the Site, where children look for fossils, rocks and minerals with the help of geological equipment.
Event time:last week in August
Duration: 10 am to 12 pm
Summer Geology School takes place every year during the last week of August, and is designed for preschool and primary school children. Its objective is to popularise geological and paleontological activities and it consists of work in the Museum and fieldwork. At the beginning, the participants are introduced to the Geology School programme, the necessary tools, geological equipment and the literature they will use. The participants present themselves, tell us why they have joined this programme, and those who have already been here, share their experiences.
TOUR OF THE MUSEUM
Participants will first be introduced to the permanent exhibition of the Krapina Neanderthal Museum, to get an insight of the subject, as well as more detailed information on paleoanthropology, geology, paleontology and archaeology.
After the tour, we will have a short discussion on interesting topics and participants actively join the discussion to ask questions or share their thoughts on the evolution of man, evolution of life on Earth, the Neanderthals, dinosaurs, mammoths, etc.
These workshops aim at stimulating the creativity, visual expression, and children's imagination and the results are always interesting and unusual.
VISIT TO THE SITE
As part of the Geology School, we will visit the Krapina Neanderthal Site, where we organise various games in which participants actively engage and present scenes form the life of Early Man.
Through fieldwork, the participants will learn how to use geological tools and equipment while researching the surroundings of the Museum and the locality. We will clean, study and analyse discovered rocks and fossil samples.
In the model building workshop children will use clay, plasticine and similar materials to shape various objects related to the theme of our museum.
IN SEARCH OF DINOSAURS
For the youngest, preschool participants we organise special games relating to the subject of popular dinosaurs. Along with the Early Man, dinosaurs are the most interesting topic and a part of our art workshops is also dedicated to that subject.
Researching the surroundings, children will discover interesting rocks and fossils which we will than analyse and prepare for museum conservation together.
VISITING DOLAC LAKE
Fieldwork will also take us to the Dolac lake, which is in the vicinity of the Museum. Having already gone through several days of Geology School, the participants will now be able to independently designate discovered fossil material and rock samples.
The educational part of the programme also consists of completing interesting worksheets through which children will confirm the knowledge they have aquired, as well as express their creativity.
ON THE TRAILS OF PRE-HUNTERS
At the end of the Summer Geology School, we organise costume games and entertainment in the Museum park.
Upon completing the programme, all participants receive a certificate and a souvenir of Krapina Early Man to remind them of their visit to the Museum and the Site.
